The framework

The Four Decisions of scaling

Verne Harnish's Scaling Up methodology comes down to four decisions every growth company has to get right: People, Strategy, Execution and Cash. Get them right and growth compounds; get one wrong and it quietly drags the other three down. The Scaling Up assessments turn each decision into something a leadership team can score, compare and improve, so your coaching conversation starts from the team's real answers instead of the loudest voice in the room.

People

Harmonious stakeholders

The right leaders, employees and partners in the right seats. Would you enthusiastically rehire everyone on the team?

Strategy

Differentiated growth

A truly differentiated strategy the whole team can state simply, from core values and purpose to the long-term goal and brand promise.

Execution

Flawless delivery

The habits and rhythms that turn plans into results: priorities, data and a meeting cadence that keeps everyone aligned.

Cash

Fuel for growth

Enough oxygen to grow: cash flow, margins and a cash conversion cycle that funds the journey instead of choking it.

Four ways in

Choose the right Scaling Up assessment

One methodology, four instruments. Open an engagement with the full diagnostic, test whether the vision is truly shared, prep every quarterly session, or score the execution habits. Most coaching relationships end up using several: the flagship assessment to start, the Quarterly Session Preparation as the recurring rhythm.

Flagship diagnostic

Why measure it

Growth problems hide in plain sight

Most leadership teams cannot tell you which of the four decisions is holding them back; they feel the symptoms and argue about the causes. The Scaling Up assessments replace that argument with a scorecard. As the coach, you walk into the room knowing where the team agrees, where it is split, and where it is fooling itself, and that changes the quality of the session you can run.

When the team measures its scaling journey, you gain

  • A shared, prioritized picture of what is holding growth back
  • Alignment gaps on the table before they derail the plan
  • Quarterly sessions that start deciding instead of warming up
  • Progress you can track from quarter to quarter

Without measurement, teams keep suffering

  • Strategy debates driven by the loudest voice in the room
  • Assumed alignment that quietly falls apart in execution
  • Cold-start planning sessions that spend hours on status
  • The same growth bottleneck resurfacing every year

Frequently asked questions

What are the Scaling Up assessments?

The Scaling Up assessments are four instruments built on Verne Harnish's Scaling Up methodology, available through Esperto: the flagship Scaling Up Assessment across the four decisions of People, Strategy, Execution and Cash, the Leadership Vision Alignment Assessment, the Quarterly Session Preparation Assessment and the Rockefeller Habits Checklist. Coaches deploy them with leadership teams to replace impressions with a scored, comparable picture.

Which assessment should I start with?

Start with the Scaling Up Assessment when you open a new engagement: it benchmarks all four decisions and shows where the real bottleneck sits. Use the Leadership Vision Alignment Assessment when strategy work is on the agenda, the Quarterly Session Preparation Assessment as your recurring rhythm before every planning session, and the Rockefeller Habits Checklist when execution discipline is the issue.

Do I need to be a certified Scaling Up coach to deploy these?

No. The assessments can be deployed directly through Esperto, with no certification gate or annual licence. Coaches trained in the Scaling Up methodology will get the most out of the debrief, but training is not a requirement to get started.

In which languages are the assessments available?

English, German, French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian. If you need another language for a client, ask and we will check what is possible.

How does deploying an assessment with a leadership team work?

You get full access to the Esperto platform: you set up the campaign, add the leaders as participants, and the engine sends the invitations and reminders automatically. Individual responses are scored and aggregated into a company-level scorecard with a leadership-team gap view, which you debrief with the team.

How is privacy handled?

Data is hosted in the Netherlands and processing is GDPR compliant. Responses are used to generate the reports; nothing is shared without consent, and team results are reported in a way that encourages honest answers.

How does pricing and my margin work?

You pay a partner rate per assessment and charge your client what fits the value of your engagement. The difference is your margin. Rates depend on the instrument and your volume, and are shared on a discovery call. There are no subscriptions or platform fees on top.

Can I combine the Scaling Up assessments with other Esperto assessments?

Yes. Many coaches pair the Scaling Up suite with tools for the human side of growth, for example a trust or culture measurement for the wider system, or an individual leadership assessment for the executives driving the plan. We can suggest combinations on a call.

How do I find out why a company's growth is stalling?

Benchmark it against the four decisions every scaling company has to get right: People, Strategy, Execution and Cash. The Scaling Up Assessment turns a vague sense of being stuck into a prioritized scorecard of what is holding the business back, and the supporting assessments let you go deeper on vision alignment, quarterly focus and execution habits.

Ready to add this to your toolkit?

Let's talk about how Scaling Up fits your practice.

A short discovery call is the fastest way to know whether the Scaling Up assessments are right for your next engagement. We will ask how you work with your leadership teams, where diagnostics and quarterly rhythm sit in your offering, and which of the four instruments fits best. Then we will be honest about whether Scaling Up is the match, or whether something else in the Esperto toolkit fits better.
