Leadership & Self-Awareness · Bill Isaacs

Pathfinder

A depth-leadership assessment your senior clients can actually feel.

For coaches and consultants working with executives and senior leaders, Pathfinder is the individual leadership assessment from Bill Isaacs and dialogOS. Grounded in the Jungian archetype tradition, it maps the four quadrants of the Pathfinder wheel, each carrying an archetype: Visionary (Sovereign), Relational (Lover), Performance (Warrior) and Insight (Magician), with twelve patterns mapped across them. Your client comes away with a named leadership theme, the circuits their strongest patterns run in, and the polarities and limits underneath. You stay the strategist, debriefing the patterns and turning the insight into a developmental path. Not a personality test; a developmental container.

About the assessment

What Pathfinder measures

Pathfinder rests on a simple but profound premise from Bill Isaacs and the dialogOS team, grounded in the Jungian archetype tradition: each of us contains multiple parts, or archetypal energies, that shape how we lead. At times these align. At times they pull against each other. Pathfinder maps those energies across the four quadrants of the Pathfinder wheel, each carrying an archetype, and scores twelve patterns across them. It is the leadership assessment and development engine of dialogOS, built from decades of work in leadership development, including the Leadership for Collective Intelligence (LCI) program at MIT Sloan, and grounded in Bill's book Dialogue: The Art of Thinking Together.

What the report maps

The four quadrants

Visionary (Sovereign), Relational (Lover), Performance (Warrior) and Insight (Magician): the four domains a leader draws on.

Twelve patterns

Three patterns in each quadrant, scored on a 0 to 10 scale, showing where this leader's energy actually goes.

Your Leadership Theme

The headline read of the report: which pattern combination leads, expressed as a named theme, for example a Mentoring Leader.

Your Circuits

The primary and secondary energy circuits connecting the leader's strongest patterns across quadrants, and how they loop.

Polarities

The paired tensions between two patterns, shown as a split between what this leader prefers to do and what they tend to avoid.

Strengths and limits

The twelve-spoke profile of where the leader is strong, and where the same pattern becomes a limit.

Typical use cases for coaches and consultants

  • Open an executive coaching engagement with a depth-read your client trusts more than a personality test.
  • Anchor a senior-leader development plan in archetypes, patterns and polarities instead of competencies.
  • Use Pathfinder ahead of a board, founder-transition or succession conversation to surface what is really at play.
  • Layer onto LCI-style leadership work where systemic awareness is the goal.
  • Equip your one-on-one coaching with a shared language for what your client is actually navigating inside.

How it works

From certified coach to leader debrief in a matter of days. You pay per report you deploy, so there are no subscriptions, no platform commitments and no surprise costs along the way.

1

You administer the survey

Once certified, you set up and send Pathfinder to a senior-leader client through the dialogOS platform. Customize the invitation, track responses, see the report come through. You pay per report, only for the leaders you actually deploy with.

2

The leader completes Pathfinder

Your client works through the questionnaire in one sitting, about 15 to 18 minutes, and the report is ready the moment they submit. Pathfinder scores the twelve patterns across the four quadrants and turns them into a named leadership theme, the circuits behind it, and the polarities and limits underneath.

3

You hold the debrief

You read the report through the lens of your coaching practice. The leadership theme gives you an opening your client recognizes; the polarities are usually where the real work announces itself. You hold the conversation. The report gives you the language.

Why it earns its place

Why coaches choose Pathfinder

Three reasons Pathfinder tends to end up in a coach's core toolkit rather than on the shelf next to the instruments that got used once.

Depth in the first hour

Senior leaders rarely need another inventory of their competencies. The archetype language gives you and your client a shared vocabulary in the first session, so the engagement starts where it would otherwise arrive after three.

Patterns, not types

Pathfinder does not sort your client into a category. It shows which patterns tend to lead, what follows when they do, and where the same strength turns into a limit. That conditional reading is what makes it developmental rather than descriptive.

Built for the debrief you lead

The report is written to be read with a coach, not instead of one. The named leadership theme gives you an opening your client recognizes, and the polarities are usually where the real work announces itself.

Coach-partner pricing

Built so you can deploy Pathfinder inside your own practice and earn your margin.

Pathfinder is priced on a pay-as-you-go basis. Once you are a certified Pathfinder Practitioner, you pay per report you deploy. No Esperto subscription, no minimums, no platform fee. Your margin lives in the difference between the per-report partner rate and what you charge your client for the leadership engagement around it.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Who is Pathfinder for?

Coaches, consultants and facilitators working 1-on-1 with senior leaders, executives and founders, who want to bring a depth-leadership read into their practice. It is designed for engagements where archetypes, patterns and polarities are more useful than competency scores or personality types. It is also suited to internal leaders building their own facilitation capacity.

How long does the engagement take?

Certification comes first: a live virtual certification programme with reflection and peer exchange. Once certified, your client completes the questionnaire in a single sitting, around 15 to 18 minutes, and the report is available immediately after they submit. The pace of the engagement is set by the debrief conversation you design around it rather than by the assessment.

In which languages is Pathfinder available?

Pathfinder is currently available in English only. More languages are planned. If you need a specific language for a client, tell us and we will let you know where it sits on the roadmap.

What does my client receive as a deliverable?

A report titled "Individual Leadership Assessment: A Guide to Leading From Your True Self". It runs to around 19 pages, is dialogOS-branded, and is headlined by a named leadership theme, for example a Mentoring Leader. Underneath that it maps the four quadrants and their archetypes, the twelve patterns scored across them, the primary and secondary circuits, and the polarities and limits at play.

Pathfinder is a self-assessment completed by the leader in one sitting, not a 360, so it reads their own view of themselves rather than feedback from colleagues. The report is written to be read with a coach, not instead of one. A next release of Pathfinder will add AI-generated narrative sections inside the report itself; we will tell you when that lands.

How is privacy handled?

An individual Pathfinder report is confidential to the leader who completed it and to you as their coach. Nobody else, including their employer, receives it without the leader's consent.

Responses are collected on the dialogOS platform, which Esperto builds and operates on its own infrastructure, so the data does not pass through a third-party assessment vendor. Esperto acts as processor on your behalf under a signed data processing agreement, in line with GDPR, and that agreement covers retention and deletion on request. The full detail, including retention periods and the rights your client can exercise, is in our privacy policy.

Do I need to be certified to deploy this with my clients?

Yes. Pathfinder is a certification-gated assessment. You complete the Pathfinder Practitioner Certification first, a live virtual programme with reflection and peer exchange, and from then on hold a Practitioner licence that lets you administer Pathfinder with as many clients as you choose. Certification also brings you into the Pathfinder Practitioner Community for ongoing learning. The programme is run by dialogOS, who set its content and terms; cohorts run through the year, so ask us when the next one opens and we will connect you.

How does pricing work, and what is my margin?

Pay-as-you-go. Once you are a certified Pathfinder Practitioner, you pay per Pathfinder report you deploy. No subscriptions, no platform fees, no minimums. Your margin sits in the difference between the per-report partner rate and what you charge your client for the leadership engagement around it. We share the per-report partner rate on a discovery call so you can price your own offer around it. Certification is arranged with dialogOS and priced separately by them.

Can I combine Pathfinder with other Esperto assessments?

Yes. Many partners pair Pathfinder with the Organizational Culture Survey (the team and culture context the leader operates in), 5 States of Success (the leader's wider success profile), or S.C.O.P.E. (organizational and functional agility). Pathfinder reads the individual leader at depth; other assessments map the system around them.

What makes Pathfinder different from other leadership assessments?

Pathfinder deliberately avoids "you are X" statements. Its reports are written as pattern language: when this leader runs a given pattern, here is what tends to follow, and here is what it costs. That conditional framing is what makes it a developmental instrument rather than a type sorter.

Grounded in the Jungian archetype tradition, it maps four quadrants and their archetypes, twelve patterns across them, and the circuits and polarities that connect them. Your client is not sorted into a category; they are shown which patterns tend to lead, and what tends to follow when they do.

Can I run Pathfinder across a whole leadership team?

Yes. Alongside the individual report there is a team-level view that lets you read a leadership team's patterns side by side. It is a different conversation from a one-on-one debrief, so talk to us about how you want to design it.

Ready to add this to your toolkit?

Let's talk about how Pathfinder fits your practice.

A short discovery call is the fastest way to know whether Pathfinder belongs in your practice. We'll ask how you work with senior leaders, whether you are open to becoming a certified Pathfinder Practitioner, and where depth-leadership work sits in your offering. Then we'll be honest about whether Pathfinder is the right match, or whether something else in the Esperto toolkit fits better.
